All of them were seeking a place to survive and—God willing—thrive and be true to themselves. Maybe some of you here today are seeking safety too. Because the disturbing truth of the matter is that there’s danger afoot in our world; some of it simply in the nature of being alive, but much of it created by people. Our prejudices, our permissive gun policies, our willingness to treat entire groups as second class citizens create a climate of risk that doesn’t have to exist. Our bad choices create unsafe places for other people.
Todos ellos buscaban lugares donde podian sobrevivir y, si Dios quiere, prosperar y ser fieles a sí mismos. Tal vez algunos de ustedes aquí están buscando la seguridad también. La verdad inquietante es que hay peligro en nuestro mundo; por una parte el peligro que existe en la naturaleza del ser vivo, pero en gran parte el peligro creado por los seres humanos. Nuestros prejuicios, nuestras políticas permisivas con respecto a las armas de fuego, nuestra voluntad de tratar a grupos como ciudadanos de segunda clase: estos resultan en un clima de riesgo que no debe existir. Son decisiones malas que crean lugares inseguros para otras personas.
But we also have the capacity to create safe space. And in fact, that’s something that Christian people have been doing for a long time. The word sanctuary, which is synonymous with our church building, also means refuge or place of safety in contemporary parlance. That’s because in the middle ages church buildings were in fact legal sanctuaries for people under threat.
Pero también tenemos la capacidad de crear espacios de refugio. Y de hecho, es algo que los cristianos hacian durante mucha de nuestra historia. La palabra santuario, que es sinónimo con el edificio de la iglesia, también significa refugio o lugar de seguridad en la jerga contemporánea. Son nombrados asi porque en la Edad Media los edificios de la iglesia eran de hecho santuarios legales para las personas amenazadas.
And in many very good ways we continue that tradition today: offering sanctuary to people threatened with deportation, as many US churches have done, or even—through ministries like the food pantry—offering safety from the threat of hunger.

Offering places and being people of safety is deeply in our identity as Christians. And when we create safety for people who are marginalized or threatened, we are doing none other than the work of Jesus, who consistently and publically affirmed people who were at risk and had no other safety. If you were here last week you might remember that Jesus held up the anointing woman—the one who was described as a sinner or a person of bad reputation—as a model of hospitality.
Ofreciendo lugares seguros y siendo personas confiables es nuestra identidad como cristianos. Y cuando creamos la seguridad para las personas que son marginadas o amenazadas, estamos haciendo nada menos que la obra de Jesúcristo, que constantemente y públicamente afirmó personas que estaban enfrantando situatiaciones ariesgadas y que no tenían otro refugio. And this week we find him doing something equally shocking; meeting with a stigmatized man whom the whole village of Geresa had evidently abandoned, conversing with him, restoring him to his right mind. Yes, there was some drama with demons and pigs, which have considerable symbolic meaning. But I think to focus primarily on the supernatural elements can distract us from the power we all have—at all times and in all places—to unshackle the people living on the margins of our society. To speak with them, to let them tell us their names, to create the kind of sanctuary that allows them to sit at the feet of Jesus themselves.
Y esta semana nos encontramos con él haciendo algo igualmente impactante; reuniendose con un hombre estigmatizado y abandonado por todo el pueblo de Geresa, conversando con él, devolviéndole a su sanidad. Sí, hay tambien un poco de drama con los demonios y los cerdos, que tienen un considerable significado simbólico. Pero creo que enfocarnos principalmente en los elementos sobrenaturales nos puede distraer del poder que todos tenemos—en todo momento y en todo lugar—para desencadenar las personas que viven en los márgenes de nuestra sociedad. Because the real sanctuary for any of us is to know ourselves as beloved of God, within a community that affirms our worth and does everything it can to diminish risk for the most vulnerable. The conditions necessary for safety might look slightly different for refugees and LGBTQ people and exploited women and black and brown lives matter, but we must fight to protect the vulnerable because Jesus protected the vulnerable. There is no East or West to which we can assign people we are unwilling to keep safe; there is no Geresa or Guantanamo we can send unwanted people to.
El verdadero santuario para cualquiera de nosotros es conocer a nosotros mismos como amados de Dios, dentro de una comunidad que afirma nuestro valor y hace todo lo posible para disminuir el riesgo para los más vulnerables. Las condiciones necesarias para la seguridad pueden ser diferentes para los refugiados y las personas LGBTQ y la mujer explotada y black lives matter, pero hay que luchar para proteger a los vulnerables porque Jesucristo protegió los vulnerables. No hay Este u Oeste donde podemos asignar personas a las que no estámos dispuestos a mantener a salvo; no hay ningún Geresa o Guantánamo donde podemos enviar personas que no queremos.
We who were baptized into Christ have clothed ourselves with Christ. This is our identity, this is our calling. So for us there can be no longer Jew or Greek, no longer slave or free, no longer male and female. There is no longer gay or straight, there is no longer legal or illegal, there is no longer Muslim or Hindu. For we who are called by the name of Christ Jesus, who is our refuge, must be sanctuary for all.
Nosotros que hemos sido bautizados en Cristo nos hemos revestidos con Cristo. Esta es nuestra identidad, esta es nuestra vocación. Por lo tanto, para nosotros no hay ni Judio ni griego, no hay ni esclavo ni libre, no hay ni masculino ni femenino. Ya no hay ni gay ni heterosexual , ni indocumentado ni legal, ni musulmán ni hindú. Para nosotros llamados por el nombre de Cristo Jesús, quien es nuestro refugio, debemos ser santuario para todos.
